Vacant lots are an easy target for illegal dumping. Now, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed legislation giving local governments another enforcement tool to combat repeat illegal dumping. The law allows authorities to immobilize, or “boot”, vehicles tied to multiple illegal dumping violations, providing communities with a way to target the vehicles used by repeat offenders rather than relying solely on fines and citations.
The new law gives California communities another option for addressing a problem that can contribute to blight, environmental hazards and neighborhood deterioration. It also demonstrates how communities can use targeted enforcement tools to address recurring nuisance activity and protect vulnerable properties.
